I had the privilege of seeing a wild rhino while I was a research intern in Zimbabwe. The day before I met this fellow, his horn had been humanely removed by the vets in an effort to protect him from being a desirable target for poachers. The plight of the species was made real for me in this moment, with the residue still clinging to the site of the removed horn, the paint freshly sprayed as a marker on the rhino's back, and thick cloud cover intensifying the solemnness of the situation.
