We live near the Appian Way (Appia Antica) Rome, Italy. We cycle into town on this ancient road, and love to picnic along the way. A bottle of red wine, some cheese and olives, just as the Romans did since it was built in 312BC. We have cycled all the way from Rome to Brindisi on this old but immensely solid road, flagstones a little jumbled here and there but a magnificent example of Roman engineering. Straight as an arrow and always the least gradient, it's an easy ride.
