I had never thought about the backs of statues before- these are Christ and the apostles along the top of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, Italy. I read that the basilica was finished in a hurry (construction began in 1506 and was completed in 1626), so perhaps they didn't have time to finish the backs of the statues. Or perhaps they figured who would ever be up there to notice?
