During my stay with a Punjabi family I photographed all of the events leading up to a wedding from their courtyard stairs, sometimes even from from the roof. In this scene the women from both sides of the groom's family have a dance-off while passing around an oil lamp made out of dough to the current contender. From above, their colorful garments contrasted the dark empty spaces and created a variety of shapes. One person is not enjoying herself, a young girl crying to her mother.
