Thingyan Burmese New Year's Celebration
The last golden light of the day illuminates our Thingyan. Brutal heat and humidity have settled on Myanmar by mid-April, and the coming of the traditional Burmese New Year is welcomed with open arms! People throw water on each other in a 'cleansing' ritual, and the cities have given the celebration a modern twist with three days of power hoses, ear-splitting music, and drinking done from the pandals (a kind of large stage) or 'mandant' positioned along key roads. It's one HUGE very wet party!
