    Reported by:

I commute many times a year by ferry to my second home on Ocracoke Island, NC. In 2004, the U.S. Coast Guard took over marine transportation security as part of the Homeland Security Act. For the first time, passengers were required to show IDs, vehicles were inspected, and LOTS of official signage was installed (but apparently not maintained) in unusual places around the vessels. DO NOT OPEN this hatch!
