The horses warm up before the Palio race. It is the final expression of the complex social structure of the city of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. Since the Middle Age the different districts of the town, called ‘Contrade’, preserve their declared rivalry. They compete twice a year in a reckless bareback horserace in the main town square in a suggestive atmosphere of time gone by. The whole community is involved in these breathtaking celebrations.
