Buddhist Slums at 4000m
Yarchen Gar, Baiyu, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China. Gar means Camp. Home to 20,000-30,000 nuns and monks (Elevation: 4000m). Only the nuns are allowed to live on the island itself, the monks have to stay on the other side of the river. Up close, it was quite horrifying to see that the nuns were living in slum-like conditions. People were squatting and shitting/peeing along the river in plain sight. Rubbish are thrown everywhere and the whole place reeks of foul smells.
