Chrysalis of Comma Butterfly
Wow! Would you believe it. I just went back to the nettle patch to check for more caterpillars and found this.. a chrysalis, the pupal stage, of a Comma Butterfly Polygonia c-album. The butterflies fly until around November and the pupa will take about 2 weeks to develop so I hope I can see the butterfly emerge. The butterflies overwinter on a tree branch looking just like a dead leaf. There is an apple tree above the nettle patch, an ideal place, So people PLEASE don't chop your nettles down.
