Waterbuck are grazers and they are highly dependent on water. They cannot tolerate dehydration. Therefore, they inhabit grassland or scrub areas that are close to rivers or other sources of water. Waterbuck will often use water as a defense mechanism. They go into the water in order to protect themselves. This is one trait that sets them apart from other sub-Saharan antelope.
