There is something mystical about Itsukushima Shrine. Surrounded by hills and water, the Torii Gate seems to magnetized people to come and gather around it. The shrine was designed and built on pier-like structures over the bay so that it would appear to be floating on the water, separate from the sacred island. The red gate stands strong and mighty through the ages since the mid -16th century. I took this picture at sunset, when the tide is low.
