A "danjiri", or portable shrine, is pulled and pushed as fast as possible through the narrow streets of a neighborhood in Kobe, Japan. These annual festivals are a "rite of passage" into manhood for local young men. The "danjiri" weigh close to two tons, including the 8 "drivers." There are no brakes or steering apparatus--they are controlled only by the power of the young men. They often tip over or lose control, and many people, including bystanders are severely injured or killed every year.
