    Edit Photo Details Detail on Japanese "Danjiri"   #festival #culture #travel #festivals #danjiri #rite_of_passage #danjiri_festival
"Danjiri", or portable shrines, are pulled and pushed as fast as possible through the narrow streets of neighborhoods in Japan in the early fall. These annual festivals are a "rite of passage" into manhood for local young men. The "danjiri" weigh close to two tons and often tip over or lose control, killing or severely injuring not only the men taking part, but also bystanders. The "shrines" are very ornate and can cost well over one hundred thousand dollars (US). This is detail from a danjiri.
