Burrowing Owl at Dusk
A burrowing owl perches on a log next to its burrow in the dunes of Humboldt Bay's south spit. Only a small number of these owls winter on the bay's dunes and in Eel River delta, as the Humboldt County coast is far from the heart of their range. This owl's burrow was found by California Conservation Corps workers as they were clearing invasive plants from the dunes, and the burrow was set up with a perimeter fence of pink tape to keep hikers and hunters from accidentally trampling the spot.
