The mute swan was introduced to NZ in the 1800s, and has since become naturalised and protected. While wild colonies exist, like many aquatic birds most prefer urban lakes and waterways, presumably as they are largely predator free food rich environments;coexisting with black swans, pukekos, ducks, and various waterfowl. In this image the beautiful white plumage contrasted starkly against the vibrant autumn colours of introduced foliage trees around an urban lake.
