When most visitors are leaving the park in autumn, hundreds of trumpeter swans migrate back to Yellowstone in late October and early November. Trumpeters initially gather along Yellowstone Lake, but as the lake freezes, the swans move to open waterways along the Madison and Firehole Rivers. Here they will remain until Spring when they return to their nesting grounds outside the park.
