Enduring Abundence
Today I attended my second Hatsugama (First Kettle) of the new year.
I am a student of Urasenke Tea ceremony. Hatsugama is the first tea gathering of the new year. The charcoal on the winter hearth is refreshed and the host treats his guests to tea and sweets.
This is an offering of kagami mochi from this years hatsugama. The rice in the mochi is said to represent good harvest and the name of the citrus (daidai) is a pun on a kanji reading (dai - 代) that means generation.
