Essentially a Taoist festival, the Festival of the Hungry Ghost is celebrated in the seventh month of the Lunar calendar. This is the time of the year when, it is said, the spirits of the ancestors become hungry and dissolute and come to wonder the earth. At this time food and other offerings are made to appease and, in this case, to entertain the these restless spirits. Here, a tense and dramatic moment in a classical Cantonese opera performance to appease the spirits.
