During a frigid morning shoot (-12F), Lake Superior had the most dense sea smoke I have ever seen. This phenomenon is caused by evaporative cooling -- the cold air temperature and warmer open water of Lake Superior create this beautiful type of winter fog. This long exposure photograph gives the sea smoke a ghostly appearance as it glides through the Aerial Lift Bridge from the Duluth Harbor. Sea smoke is one of my favorite winter subjects to photograph; this shoot was a visual feast!
