Green Sea Turtle, Sharks Cove, Hawaii
A green sea turtle in Shark Cove on the north shore of O'ahu, Hawai'i. These turtles are not actually green; the algae on which they feed also grows on their shells, making them appear green until they visit a cleaning station and have the algae picked off their shells by cleaner wrasse and other fish. This one bears the mark of an accident on her nose, resulting in a lost scale. Probably the minor injury occurred while trying to scrape algae off volcanic rocks in heavy surf.
