A solid gold, 5.5 ton statue of Buddha sits in Wat Traimit in Bangkok, Thailand. The statue probably dates from the 14th century and was made in Sukhothai, later moved to Ayutthaya, and now has its home in the new capital. At some point, the statue was covered in stucco to prevent thievery by Burmese pillagers, and somehow everyone forgot that, among the ruins of Ayutthaya, this plaster statue enclosed a tremendous mass of gold. The hidden treasure was discovered by accident in 1955.
