Marran grass is the first plant to colonize the bald dunes of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. She creates a solid web with her roots that holds the sand and prevent the erosion. Thanks to her, other organisms will be able to settle down. She makes possible the ecological succession, the transition from open beach and foredune, to the complex eastern deciduous forest or the wetlands.
