The Manganiyar Seduction
The manganiyars are a caste of folk musicians that live in the Thar desert of India. Today they are muslim, but their forefathers were hindus. Their sufi lyrics reflect that synthesis. The instruments are wholly traditional Rajasthani. A troupe of 38 musicians and singers are housed in a jewel-box stage set as a part of the traveling production called 'The Manganiyar Seduction'. The man standing is not a conductor but plays a hand instrument and adds a theatrical element by dancing.
