Our guard rests while we enjoy the view in the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia. He walks with us wherever we go, ensuring no one falls behind. He's there to protect the tourists, though I couldn't help but feel that he was really protecting the land from the tourists. He depends on the tourists for their income, and in turn, depends on the land for the tourists. This is hard country and these are hardened men. Fortunately, gracious enough to not mock this soft city-boy as he struggled to keep up.
