Spending some time in an authentic elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai, Thailand was one of the greatest experiences I've had in my travels. Places where you can ride elephants (or where they perform tricks for you) have tamed them through “Phajaan”, a process that can be translated as “crushing of the soul”. Instead, I've tried to capture the closeness and affection between this particular group of elephants and one of their caretakers at the sanctuary. Soul sharing instead of crushing.
