Northern Flicker
While exploring an abandoned nature trail in Rockville, I spotted what appeared to me as a very unusual bird. He posed patiently for me as I used a 300mm lens to capture several pictures and I jotted down features and characteristics before he flew away. I had guessed perhaps a woodpecker because of his long skinny beak and sure enough, when I looked in the bird book at home I found the Northern Flicker to be an unusual woodpecker who prefers ants to all other types of food.
