Among the Nyangatom it falls to the women, children and young girls to collect water. Water in this very arid region is scarce, and in the dry season it can be an exhausting task. This picture features a girl collecting water for her family, perching two full jerrycans on her head. She wears intricate set of necklaces that are traditional to both the Nyangatom and their neighbours the Turkana. Visible beneath them is a layer of red ochre and butter applied for decorative effect.
