    Major Amos McLemore (8/23/1823 – 10/5/1863) of Jones Co, MS was a Confederate States Army soldier murdered at Deason Home. A Union raiding party in 6/1863 was captured by civilians. Protection was needed from the locals. Deserter Newton Knight, and his followers murdered Major McLemore Oct. 5, 1863. Legend has it that the Deason home has been haunted ever since. The bedroom door where Maj. McLemore was shot opens violently on the eve of his murder along with a blood stain near the fireplace.
