Caesarea consist of ‘Caesarea Maritima,’ the ancient Caesarea, and modern Caesarea. Bringing water to ancient Caesarea that had no wells, was quite a challenge and the whole water supply system of aquaeducts and dams etc. is a remarkable achievement! The first aquaeduct was built by Herod (22 BCE to 10 BCE), at the time the city was founded and dedicated to the Roman Caesar, Augustus. A second ‘lower’ aquaeduct was built by the Legions of the Emperor Hadrian (2nd Century CE).
