Yungdrung Tharpaling Monastery, known today as Lamayuru, is the most ancient monastery of Ladakh. Legend has it that the region, where Yungdrung Tharpaling is situated today, approximately 127 km to the west of Leh, the capital of Ladakh, was under a big lake at the time of Buddha Shakyamuni.
