This was an unusual shadow in clouds effect. I hike up a mountain in Alaska in the dark hour before sunrise, rising through thick clouds below as I go. I stand on a peak after the sun raised above the flat horizon but before it raised above mountains to the east. Suddenly the clouds erupt in rainbow colors. Just above the still dark ridge silhouette I am on, the shadow of another mountain peak far to the east is cast into the bright color filled clouds around me.
