Yawning Polar Bear
On an arctic cruise in Baffin Bay, Nunavut, Canada, we saw a mother polar bear and her two cubs sleeping on an ice floe. We quietly approached the floe. The bears noses lifted into the air and they became curious about the ship. The bears approached us, but their sleepy state never changed. They lounged on the edge of the floe in the late afternoon August sun. As its long shadow cast blue I snapped this polar bear cub's drowsy yawn.
