Melting Glaciers in the High Andes
In mid-2013 I began my doctoral field research in the high Andes south of Cusco, Peru. I marked the coordinates of the ice cliff along a 2 km stretch of glacier. When I returned in early 2016, the ice was unrecognizable. Only by using my saved GPS coordinates was I able navigate to the same sampling points. What had been a 10-12 meter vertical wall of solid ice had crumbled, fragmented, fallen, melted.
