2013 saw a crippling drought bring much of the southwest to its knees. As we drove through the San Juan Mountains as part of our family road trip we passed reservoir after reservoir that was bone dry. Trout Lake, which is fed by glacial melt from the surrounding mountains had water, but so little that the tribute feeding it cut a slow channel across most of what should have been lake-bed.
