    As the sun sets at the Grahamstown horse riding school, Eastern Cape, South Africa, the rubbish continues to accumulate and eventually it is so bad that one cannot see through the fence. Only 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled worldwide and when they are discarded they can persist for centuries.
