    The Palisades make up a part of the Clarno Unit in John Day Fossil Beds. Fossils of plant and animal life from over 44 million years ago can be found here. This is desert country and can be quite hot in summer months. It's also ideal for rattlesnakes and I was reminded of that when I nearly stepped on one when hiking around this area!
