Survival on the Galápagos
Despite not being truly social, iguanas are highly gregarious – especially on cold nights when they tend to group together to conserve heat.
They bask in the sun in the mornings, absorbing heat with their black scales until they have enough heat energy to swim out to sea to forage. Upon entering the water, their heartbeats drastically slow down to half its regular pace in order to conserve oxygen and energy which then allow them to feed in depths of 9 m (30 ft).
