These Black Turnstones were photographed in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. They are part of a subpopulation that has recently been determined to be spending all year in Alaska. Black Turnstones are one of my favorite species because of their delightful personalities. While taking of this image, these two birds watched me from time to time as they dozed in the cold morning air waiting for the sun to warm the beach enough for them to start flipping pebbles in search of aquatic insects.
