The wishing well comes from an old European folk tale where wishes are granted by the deities, dwellers of the well or guardians. Dropping coins into a wishing well is a symbolization paid to the deities for appreciation, but if your coin landed heads up your wish granted, tales and your wish was said to be ignored.
