Each day as I walk along the Kasumi River in the west Tokyo suburb of Ome I look for the kingfisher. Usually he is perched on a branch overlooking the water from which he can dive in to catch a minnow for a meal. On this day a bitter north wind was blowing and I finally found him sheltering in the branches of a tree.
