El Caminito del Rey is a walkway along the walls of the narrow Gaitanes' gorge, near Ardales. It was built to ease maintenance of the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls, at the beginning of the 20th century. The walkway eventually fell into disrepair and, following five deaths in 1999 and 2000, the walkway was closed, gaining the reputation of the "world's most dangerous walkway". In 2015, after some security measures were adopted, it reopened.
