Time knows how to stand still in the presence of a wood fire. Years ago I tossed the television and replaced it with an exquisite Norwegian wood-burning stove. Still, I wished for an outdoor fireplace as well. After decades of living only in my head I was finally able to make that dream come true. The inaugural fire took shape quickly as I settled down to lose myself in the flickering firelight. Add the warm and steady glow of an old kerosene lantern, and the moment could have gone on forever.
