Memories and Shadows
Early this year a dear friend died of cancer. This sweater was hers and I wear it often now. I think about her every time I put it on. The shadows in the photo are from flowers on the table. They are like the memories of a loved one. Their contours shift and wane, they appear and fade as the light changes. They defy us to grasp them tight but inevitably they change as time passes. Mixed in with the sorrow of loss there is the gratitude of having those shadows touch us.
I like Your Shot user Lawrence Sibley's comment: "The hand gesture and the symmetrical reflection subtly evoke[s] a theme of connectedness and relationship —over which a shadow has fallen. Knowing the personal association this sweater has for you with your friend, who died of cancer, adds a contextual layering of meaning and feeling to seeing this photo, but the visual grammar and symbolism of the image doesn't need that contextual information to convey the photo's feeling tone."
