A brief stop at a roadside pullout to stretch my legs led to a chance encounter with this massive bull elk in repose while he chewed his cud amidst a remarkable back drop. I stayed with him for over an hour observing his manner as we posed for many majestic shots. Eventually he disappeared down the very short drop to the lake for a drink of water. I dared not approach in such close quarters and in the fading light. Simply incredible.
