These elephant herd in Minneri National Park in Sri Lanka appears to have escaped the 30 year war between the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil guerrillas. Now that peace has returned for some years now, the numbers of herds have grown. There is a difference though. Few of the bulls have tusks. Breeding between non tuskers may have contributed to this, in a way protecting the future of the herds from the destructive ivory trade.
