There are around 7.5 billion people who call the Earth home. We come from all different kinds of backgrounds and locations, but we all share this planet as home base. That is why it is so important that we take care of our one true home, at the moment it feels as if a wake up call is needed for all humans. We have seen the facts and figures, National Geographic has reported on the production of 300 million tons of plastic that is being produced each year, a significant amount of said plastic will find it's way into the ocean. The call to action for this assignment was to share images that celebrate the planet, but also show visually locations and things that could be in jeopardy if we don't stop the negative impact that plastic and human waste can have on the environment.
While curating the images for this final story, I tried to imagine what some of these places would look like if we didn't take care of the Earth. Would a national park still have it's beauty? Would migration patterns of animals cease to exist? These are all very important things to consider as we decide which path we will take in the future, will it be planet or plastic? Choose the planet.
National Geographic is working on a multiyear campaign in which we ask the question, Planet or Plastic? This has been a call to action to reduce plastic waste across the entire globe. Choose the planet and take the pledge today.
