This whole assignment came to life thanks to the contributions of Your Shot photographer Noah Brooks. The edit you are seeing below was entirely selected by him and shows us how each photographer was able to explore their state. Noah's idea for this assignment was to ask each community member to share with us images that showed off your exploration skills, as you were tasked with finding moments and locations that showed off your location or state. Now state did not mean we had to stay within the confines of America. A state can be an area or land that is near you, it could be a state of mind, or it could be the current state in which you call home. I believe each of Noah's final selections show off a diverse set of places and people that all make up the state of Your Shot.
Something I noticed within the selections that Noah chose was that he looked for a variety of angles and perspective that could make this story feel whole at the end. The image to the left captured by Andro Loria is such a simple idea, but works so well to convey the mood of a location and puts me right in the thick of this scene with the photographer. I love how it resembles a painting. It's a great example of being in the right location at the right time and having your camera ready.
When I started to build this story, I wanted to make sure we were seeing each state that the Your Shot photographer captured from different points of view. We start outside and then make our way through a few indoor portraits, before heading outside again and ending near the water. I saw this edit as a way to travel from point A to point B, stories should be it's own form of traveling for the viewer so I hope you enjoyed the journey.
This was the first time we ran a poll to ask you our community to vote on the next assignment that would be presented on Your Shot. A big thank you to everyone who was involved with the voting process and sharing why you voted for a certain theme. I love that this community took the idea and style of letting us know what you love about a certain image and evolved that to what you loved about the themes that were pitch by your fellow Your Shot photographers.
A thank you to Noah Brooks, who helped with the final selections and came up with an idea that seem to inspire those who submitted images. Please continue to pitch your assignment theme ideas to us, we do check those recommendations and are looking for more ideas from you, our community.
