Happy New Year Your Shot photographers. I have curated “My Best Photos of (Year)” and “My Best Photos of (Month)” assignments, so I was really excited to do a “My Best Photos of (Day)” — and I loved seeing how our global community spent the same 24-hours on January 1, 2019. Notice the similarities and differences. Your Shot photographer Nidhi Raman made a very smart observation on our discussion board: “The best thing I like about this assignment is that everyone is starting anew within the same time frame whether they are pros or hobbyists and sharing fresh and incredible content from around the world.” I absolutely agree, and love that she recognized this opportunity.
Of the 26 images selected for this final story, 13 Your Shot photographers were published for the first time: Melissa Richard, Đăng Lê, Thien Pham, Naoki Hase, Lyuboslav Lyubomirov, Kevin Antol, Jeff Young, David Murray, Clarence Schramm, Nikhil Brahma, Fabrizio Bonifazi, Tatiana Vasilyeva, and Hanna Wolf. Congratulations.
I also featured in my Editor’s Note the comments from 11 Your Shot photographers articulating WHY they liked the photos of their peers: Anirudh Ranjan, Victor Mirontschuk, Dee Dee, Marketa Zvelebvil, Suvendra Dasgupta, Rose Ungvari, David Miller, Nicholas Paoni, Terra Fondriest, Michelle Zheng, and Stephanie Thomson. Thanks for supporting your fellow photographers. This type of encouragement is what truly makes Your Shot a special community. Keep it up.
At National Geographic, we believe in the power of science, exploration and storytelling to change the world. As their photo community, Your Shot is your opportunity to contribute to this mission. Our “My Best Photos of (Day),” “My Best Photos of (Month),” and “My Best Photos of (Year)” assignments produce visual diaries documenting and archiving the moments of our world, one photo at a time.
FYI — “My Best Photos of January 2019” launches on January 25, 2019. The prompt is simple: share your best photos taken from January 1-31, 2019. To become a better photographer and more thoughtful storyteller, you need to keep shooting. That is the mission of these “My Best Photos of (Month)” assignments.
2019 is going to be a great year.
