First off I wanted to thank you all for participating in the assignment. Though I don't think of it as an assignment. It's more like an excuse to experiment and work on the craft we all love. That is the great thing about a venue like Your Shot: We might be living and photographing all over the world and have completely different lifestyles, but we all find joy in making pictures and we can come together here to do it.

Obviously the making photographs concept was lost on a few people, and others questioned whether or not I even needed to differentiate the practice. So I wanted to take the time to make a few things clear that maybe weren't in my last assignment updates.

    THERE ARE NO RULES.

Good art doesn't follow dots or lines—otherwise we would still be drawing like we did in kindergarten with paint-by-number books.

Art—and for this class specifically, street photography—is about expressing yourself and asking questions through image-making about the world around you. Some approaches may be more successful than others depending on what you hope to create.

I love reflections. Its one more way of seeing, one more tool in the photographers camera bag. This image takes a random street scene and elevates it to art. Its a harmony of light and movement.

That being said I hope some of my suggestions helped. Here are some more:

It's important, I believe, not to get too caught up on the easiest cliché shot: beggars.
There were more beggar photos in this assignment than anything else. And while the homeless are an issue that society at large must deal with, they aren't merely compositional elements to make an image with. That is too easy and we must all try to rise above that.

This is awesome. I love the layering of three separate images. This is a great example of the spontaneity of street photography, of merging the found and planned with the decisive moment.

On a somewhat less serious note: Street photography is not about photographing the actual “street.” Unless you folks (you know who you are) did it on purpose because it's funny. If that's the case, ha!

A lot of folks here experimented with their approach, from asking permission and talking to people before and after photographing them to not talking to anyone. Some photographers played with reflections and lens flares. Or shadows and shafts of light.

And that's really key. Keep on playing with what you see in front of you. Keep on yearning to make an image that shows others how you see the world.

One of the most important things I learned was how to think while I was lost in the kinetic frenzy of photography. I had just returned from several months in Iraq and went straight to an assignment backstage at New York’s fashion week. One day I was in a war zone, the next in First World luxury. Needless to say, the dichotomy hit me like a ton of psychological bricks. I had to take a moment, to stand in the back of the room as models fluttered by and take a deep breath. I had to put my camera down. I had to look with my own eyes at the swirl of life and figure out my place in it. I had to see something that only I could see, and I had to figure out how to articulate that with my camera.

And that is the challenge for all of us. Make the images that show the world as you see it; make images that make your audience want to see the world just like you.

And with that I bid you all adieu (just like I did to the purple-leather-clad French dominatrix).
