When I was a freelance photographer, Instagram reminded that there were a lot of extremely talented photographers also following their dreams — and that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to continue pushing myself to work harder to be a better photographer and more thoughtful storyteller. As the manager of the Your Shot Instagram account (@natgeoyourshot) for over the past two years, it has been my honor to curate beautiful photos by the Your Shot community and share them with our growing Instagram audience, now at 1.7M followers, many who I hope find inspiration in your work like I still do.
Of the 33 photos selected for this final story, 9 Your Shot photographers were published for the first time. Congratulations to Rémi Flament, Danté Vincent, Ramachandiran Govindaraj, Maggie Machinsky, Daniele Monfredini, Mark Forder, Sausthav Negi, Nilanjan Chatterjee, and Ioana Sand. Keep up the great work.
I would also love to recognize the 18 Your Shot photographers who left thoughtful comments articulating WHY they liked the photos of their peers — which I featured in my Editor's Note. Thanks to Michelle Zheng, Rose Ungvari, Stephanie Thomson, Dave Weldon, Tanya Ambrose, Srijita Nandy, Debjit Chatterjee, Elizabeth Paoletti, Vanessa Egerdahl, Carole Mills Noronha, Sydney Harter, Marie Smith, Pierre-Emmanuel Guiberteau, Lawrence Sibley, Nele Horemans, Anirudh Ranjan, Volker Jeschonnek, and Shivesh Ram. I really appreciate your positive engagement with your fellow community members. I am seeing a lot of the same names again and again, you know who you are. Keep up the great work. I am paying attention.
In life, you have to seize opportunities when they are presented to you — and this assignment was your chance to be featured in front of our growing Instagram audience of 1.7M followers. Since launching the assignment on January 2, 2019, I have been using my editor’s favorites to identify content to consider sharing on our Instagram feed and story. I am doing the same thing with my “For National Geographic’s Photo of the Day” assignment; I will be using my editor’s favorites to help me with the curation process of the Photo of the Day franchise. Yes, have fun with these Your Shot assignments, but my advice is to also recognize and take advantage of the opportunity that is available to you right now.
